New Weapon Lions Snag Tight End from Jets

The Detroit Lions are bringing in some extra help at tight end. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the team is signing Kenny Yeboah to a one-year deal.

Yeboah has been in the league for four years after playing college ball at Temple and Ole Miss. He went undrafted in 2021 but stuck around with the Jets, where he played in 33 games and made two starts. While he hasn’t been much of a receiving threat—just nine career catches for 111 yards and a touchdown—he did pull off a wild Hail Mary grab during his rookie preseason.

At 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, Yeboah is built more for blocking, which is exactly how the Jets used him. Last season, 88 of his 106 offensive snaps came as an inline tight end. He’s also been a key contributor on special teams, logging over 100 snaps in each of his four NFL seasons.

The Lions needed to add depth at the position. Before signing Yeboah, they only had Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright under contract. James Mitchell left for the Panthers in January, and Shane Zylstra is still a free agent. Expect Detroit to make more moves at tight end before the offseason wraps up.
