New Year, New Numbers: Gibbs & Williams Lead Lions’ Jersey Swaps

The Detroit Lions are shaking things up—not just with their roster but with their jersey numbers as well. Several players are making the switch for the 2025 season, with two of the team’s biggest playmakers leading the way.

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who wore No. 26 as a rookie, is switching to No. 1. The move brings him back to the number he wore during his college days at Georgia Tech and Alabama, embracing the identity that helped make him one of the most explosive backs in football. Meanwhile, wide receiver Jameson Williams is also on the move—again. After wearing No. 18 as a rookie and then switching to No. 9 last season, the speedy receiver is now eyeing No. 1 as well. That obviously creates a conflict, as only one player can claim the number, so it remains to be seen how that situation plays out.

The number changes aren’t stopping there. Several other Lions are making adjustments ahead of the new season, though the full list has yet to be revealed. With free agents and draft picks set to join the mix, more shifts are likely before the team finalizes its 2025 roster. Whether it’s on the back of their jerseys or on the field, the Lions are embracing change as they gear up for another run at the Super Bowl.
