NFL Draft Watch: Meet Playmaking WR Prospect Luther Burden III

Could Luther Burden III Be a Future Lion?
The Detroit Lions may not have an urgent need at wide receiver, but that hasn’t stopped mock drafts from linking them to Missouri’s Luther Burden III late in the first round. With Brad Holmes prioritizing talent over immediate positional needs, Burden’s skill set makes him an intriguing possibility for Detroit.

Despite a drop in production last season due to inconsistent quarterback play, Burden showcased his explosiveness in 2023, racking up 1,212 yards and nine touchdowns. His ability to create after the catch aligns well with the Lions’ offensive philosophy. While Detroit already has Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Tim Patrick in place, the long-term picture could justify this pick—especially with Williams entering the final year of his rookie deal.

Burden, who ran a 4.41-second 40-yard dash at the combine, has a history with Williams, as both played in the same youth program and attended the same high school in St. Louis. If the Lions opt for a playmaker who can contribute now and develop into a long-term asset, Burden could be the next weapon in their high-powered offense.
