NFL Insider Confirms AFC Team’s Strong Interest in Carlton Davis

The Detroit Lions could face stiff competition in their efforts to re-sign cornerback Carlton Davis this offseason. After an impressive 2024 campaign that was cut short by a broken jaw, Davis is set to test the free-agent market, where multiple teams are expected to pursue him. While Detroit remains a strong contender to bring him back, an AFC team has emerged as a serious threat.

According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Jacksonville Jaguars are “gauging the market” for Davis as they look to bolster their secondary. Back in January, Fowler had already linked Jacksonville to Davis, noting that while the team doesn’t plan to be “huge spenders” in free agency, they are interested in strengthening their pass defense. Now, coming out of the NFL Combine, it appears the Jaguars are taking a closer look at adding the physical cornerback to their roster.

Jacksonville’s new head coach, Liam Coen, has emphasized a desire to build a more physical team, a mentality that aligns with Davis’ aggressive style of play. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers standout is known for his ability to excel in press-man coverage and contribute in run defense, making him an ideal fit for what the Jaguars want to establish on defense.

For the Lions, retaining Davis could be critical to maintaining their secondary’s success heading into 2025. However, with the Jaguars and potentially other teams entering the mix, Detroit may have to decide how much they’re willing to spend to keep him. If the Jaguars make a strong financial push, Davis will have to weigh the opportunity to stay in Detroit against the chance to secure what could be the last major contract of his career.
