The Detroit Lions continue their aggressive approach to the offseason, securing D.J. Reed on a three-year, $48 million deal with $32 million fully guaranteed. The former New York Jets cornerback brings proven talent and reliability, making him a major addition to Detroit’s secondary.
At 5-foot-9, 188 pounds, Reed may not have elite size, but he plays big, excelling in man coverage—a perfect fit for the Lions’ blitz-heavy defense. Over the past three seasons, PFF has graded him consistently above 70, ranking 28th among corners playing man coverage in 2024. His presence immediately upgrades a defense that finished 30th in passing yards allowed last season.
Pairing Reed with rookie standout Terrion Arnold gives the Lions a formidable outside duo, while young corners Ennis Rakestraw and Amik Robertson will battle for the nickel role. This move also hurts division rival Green Bay, which was reportedly interested in signing Reed.
Coming off back-to-back NFC North titles, the Lions are all-in on their championship window. With a top-tier offense and now a strengthened secondary, Detroit is positioning itself for another deep playoff run in 2025.
