NFL Makes Final Decision on Punishment for Two Lions Players After Investigation

League hands down fines following heated Lions-Chiefs clash, as Detroit looks to move forward from controversy

Tempers Flare in Fiery Lions-Chiefs Showdown

The Detroit Lions’ matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs on October 12 turned into one of the most intense games of the season — and not just because of the scoreboard. While the Chiefs ultimately claimed a 30-17 win at Arrowhead Stadium, emotions boiled over on both sidelines, leaving the NFL no choice but to take disciplinary action.

The post-game tension reached its peak when Brian Branch clashed with Juju Smith-Schuster after briefly brushing off Patrick Mahomes, prompting a one-game suspension for the young Lions defender. However, Branch wasn’t the only Detroit player to face punishment once the league’s weekly disciplinary review wrapped up.

NFL Fines Alex Anzalone and Tyler Lacy for On-Field Conduct

In its official Week 6 disciplinary report, the NFL confirmed that two additional Lions players — linebacker Alex Anzalone and defensive lineman Tyler Lacy — were fined for their actions during the Chiefs game.

Anzalone received a $12,172 fine for “unnecessary roughness” under the “striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing” category, while Lacy was fined $5,722 for the same violation. These fines are part of the league’s ongoing initiative to curb dangerous play and maintain what it calls “competitive balance and game integrity.”

According to the NFL’s official statement, all fines collected are directed toward charitable causes. The funds will go to the Professional Athletes Foundation — supporting retired players in need — and the NFL Foundation, which promotes player health, safety, and youth football programs nationwide.

Controversy Over Officiating Clouds the Outcome

While the disciplinary actions made headlines, they weren’t the only source of frustration for Detroit. The Lions were also left puzzled by a controversial officiating decision that overturned a Jared Goff touchdown early in the game.

Head coach Dan Campbell, appearing on 97.1 FM The Ticket, revealed that he was told the league’s New York office had intervened in the call — yet game referee Craig Wrolstad later denied that such communication occurred. The mixed messages have only added to fans’ confusion and skepticism surrounding the officiating of the high-stakes matchup.

Detroit Looks Ahead

Despite the penalties and controversy, the Lions remain one of the NFC’s most competitive teams. Their resilience has defined their season so far — and if anything, this latest drama might only fuel their determination heading into the next stretch of games.

Detroit will aim to turn the page quickly and refocus on the ultimate goal: a deep postseason run. The fire that boiled over in Kansas City may have drawn fines, but it also underscored the Lions’ passion and will to win — qualities that could carry them far in the months ahead.
