NFL Playoffs: Jameson Williams’ Touchdown Run Breaks Records

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams made history during Saturday night’s NFC Divisional Round game against the Washington Commanders, reclaiming a prestigious record for the longest touchdown run by an Alabama alumnus in NFL playoff history. His 61-yard run also set the record for the longest touchdown by a player from any Alabama high school or college in postseason play.

Breaking Records

With 4:01 left in the first half, Williams electrified Ford Field with his 61-yard touchdown run, surpassing Derrick Henry’s 44-yard record set just a week prior. Henry’s run, which helped the Baltimore Ravens defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers during Wild-Card Weekend, had briefly dethroned Williams’ previous record—a 42-yard score in the Lions’ NFC Championship Game loss to the 49ers last season.

Before Williams’ achievement, the record for the longest touchdown run by a player from an Alabama high school or college in the playoffs belonged to former Auburn standout Ronnie Brown, who recorded a 58-yard score for the San Diego Chargers in 2014.

Historical Significance

Williams’ touchdown was not only a milestone for Alabama players but also entered the Detroit Lions’ playoff record books as the second-longest touchdown run in franchise history. Only Doak Walker’s 67-yard run in the 1952 NFL Championship Game surpasses it.

Williams’ NFL Impact

In his young career, Williams has shown remarkable efficiency as a rusher, scoring four touchdowns on just 17 carries. Two of those scores have come in postseason play, highlighting his knack for delivering in critical moments.
