No Debut Yet? Lions Signal Two Highly-Touted Rookies May Miss Hall of Fame Game

With the Hall of Fame Game just around the corner, the Detroit Lions are already making cautious moves when it comes to their prized rookie class.

Head coach Dan Campbell revealed that first-round pick Tyleik Williams and second-rounder Tate Ratledge are both unlikely to suit up for Thursday’s preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers. While not officially ruled out, Campbell strongly hinted that the team is leaning toward holding them out — prioritizing long-term development and health over early-game reps.

Both Williams and Ratledge have been drawing buzz throughout training camp, with flashes of strength and potential that fit exactly what Detroit’s trenches needed. But as Campbell put it, there’s no need to rush them into live action with so much season ahead.

Lions fans may be disappointed not to see their new favorites under the lights this week, but the coaching staff is clearly playing the long game. Expect more looks at younger depth players and undrafted rookies as the team begins evaluating the bottom half of the roster in Canton.

For Williams and Ratledge, their true debut might just come when the spotlight is a little bigger — and the stakes a lot higher.
