Darius Slay isn’t sweating his release from the Eagles—it’s just business.
After helping Philly win the Super Bowl, the 34-year-old cornerback saw the writing on the wall. But instead of being bitter, he took to his Big Play Slay podcast to keep it real.
“It’s part of the business, and I ain’t mad about it,” Slay said. “I gave that team everything I had. But hey, the door isn’t completely closed.”
Slay understands the Eagles want to get younger in the secondary, especially after drafting Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. He’s been through this before—back in 2022, the Eagles were considering moving on but ended up bringing him back on a reworked deal. Could history repeat itself?
“You never know. Howie (Roseman) spun the block once before and look what happened—we won a Super Bowl,” Slay said.
If a Philly reunion doesn’t happen, Slay wouldn’t mind heading back to where it all started: Detroit. The Lions need a veteran corner, and he still has love for the team, despite his past issues with former coach Matt Patricia.
“If there’s anywhere I’d love to play, it’s Philly or Detroit,” he said. “It’d be a blessing. Like Malcolm Jenkins—he started with the Saints, went to Philly, and finished back in New Orleans. That’d be cool.”
Still, Slay isn’t locking himself into just those two teams. He mentioned he’s got major respect for Steelers coach Mike Tomlin and is open to seeing what other opportunities pop up.
At his age, he’s likely to land a deal later in free agency rather than right away. But with his experience and championship pedigree, someone’s going to come calling.
