Did the Detroit Lions Offense Take a Hit? Not So Fast.
Losing Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears might seem like a big deal for the Detroit Lions’ offense, but let’s pump the brakes on any panic. The foundation of one of the NFL’s most potent offenses remains intact, and new play-caller John Morton isn’t here to reinvent the wheel—he’s here to keep it rolling.
Yes, we won’t truly know the impact of this coaching change until the season kicks off, but one thing is clear: The Lions have built a powerhouse on offense, and their key players aren’t going anywhere. While Detroit may need to start thinking about a succession plan for some aging offensive linemen, keeping that dominant unit strong remains a top priority.
The NFL’s Best Offensive Core? Detroit Makes Its Case.
Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery? Arguably the league’s best running back duo. Amon-Ra St. Brown and a rising Jameson Williams? A dynamic receiving tandem. And whether you love or criticize Jared Goff, he’s undeniably a top-10 quarterback.
Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report recently ranked every team’s offensive “building blocks” heading into the 2025 offseason. Detroit came out on top, edging out the Philadelphia Eagles for the No. 1 spot.
Detroit’s Core Building Blocks:
QB Jared Goff
RB Jahmyr Gibbs
WR Amon-Ra St. Brown
OT Penei Sewell
TE Sam LaPorta
According to Moton, the Lions earned the top ranking because all five of these players have received Pro Bowl or All-Pro recognition in the past two years. That collective success separates them from the pack.
And here’s the kicker—this core is still incredibly young. Gibbs (23), St. Brown (25), Sewell (24), and LaPorta (24) will all be 25 or younger at the start of next season. Even Williams (24) wasn’t included in the ranking, but his expected third-year breakout could make Detroit’s offense even more dangerous.
So while losing Johnson may raise some eyebrows, Detroit’s offensive firepower is here to stay. The best might still be yet to come.
