Offensive Camp Battles Heating Up: Lions Roster Spots on the Line

The battle for roster spots is already underway in Detroit, and nowhere is the competition fiercer than on offense. With a loaded roster and rising expectations, the Lions’ 2025 training camp is shaping up to be a war zone—especially for players fighting on the bubble.

At quarterback, it’s Jared Goff’s show, but the backup role could see a shakeup. Hendon Hooker looks locked into the No. 2 spot, which puts pressure on Adrian Martinez and any new arrivals to show something quickly—or risk the cut.

In the backfield, Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery are safe, but the third running back spot is wide open. Mohamed Ibrahim, Craig Reynolds, and rookie camp invites are all trying to prove they can contribute on special teams and offer depth.

The wide receiver room is loaded with talent. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams are untouchable, but names like Kalif Raymond, Antoine Green, and Donovan Peoples-Jones are fighting to stay relevant. Don’t be surprised if an under-the-radar rookie makes things complicated.

Tight end could be another sneaky battle. Sam LaPorta is a star, but beyond him, Brock Wright, James Mitchell, and rookie hopefuls are all battling for the TE2 role.

And on the offensive line, the starting five looks solid—but backup spots will be earned, not given. Vets like Matt Nelson could be on thin ice if young linemen flash potential.

Bottom line: Detroit’s offense is talented from top to bottom, but with only 53 roster spots, someone with experience is going to be shown the door. This camp will separate the grinders from the placeholders. Let the battles begin.
