Get Your Popcorn Ready: Jameson Williams Is Taking Off in 2025
If you’re not already excited for what Jameson Williams has in store this season, it’s time to buckle up — because the Lions’ young receiver is turning heads like never before.
At Detroit Lions training camp, no player has generated more buzz than the fourth-year wideout. Back in the spring, offensive coordinator John Morton stirred some eyebrows by calling for a breakout year from Williams. But that call doesn’t sound so bold anymore — especially after Williams topped 1,000 receiving yards last season for the first time in his career.
Now, as camp heats up, his growth is even more obvious. The mistakes from early in his career — dropped passes, route miscommunications — feel like a distant memory. His route running has reached a new level.
One rep from Monday’s practice perfectly captures his evolution. In a red-zone, one-on-one matchup with veteran corner Rock Ya-Sin, Williams ran a masterclass of deception. He started by luring the corner with a subtle setup, faked a fade route to the back pylon (even turning his head to sell it), then cut sharply toward the front pylon — leaving his defender in the dust for an easy touchdown.
And this isn’t just a single highlight. Williams has consistently shown off sharper, more diverse routes throughout camp.
“People looked at him as just a deep threat, but if you’ve been watching this camp, he’s ran every single route,” said fellow receiver Tim Patrick. “I think most of his routes have been short routes that he’s been catching. Everybody knows what he can do in the deep game, but now he’s finding that short range and that’s going to make him impossible to stop.”
Even better news? Detroit doesn’t plan on limiting him to short gains. Morton’s still looking to unleash the deep ball — and Williams will be a big part of that.
“I’m isolating guys. I want to give them the chance, so I’m taking more shots,” Morton explained. “Plus, I want to see who can do it and then make the corrections… If you got them, utilize them.”
Lions safety Brian Branch put it best:
“Get y’all popcorn ready for Jamo, man,” Branch said. “It’s going to be fun to watch him this year. I feel like that’s exactly what he needed.”
