As the 2025 NFL season draws near, experts across the league are taking a closer look at team rosters to assess where each squad stands. One group getting a lot of buzz is the Detroit Lions’ running back unit, which is being praised for its impressive mix of talent, versatility, and depth.

Many analysts agree that the Lions have built the most complete backfield in the NFL. Their running game features both electric playmakers and steady, proven veterans—an ideal fit for Detroit’s offensive system. Analyst Warren Sharp even went so far as to rank the Lions’ running back room as the best in the league heading into the new season.

At the heart of Detroit’s ground attack is the dynamic duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Gibbs, entering his third season, has averaged an eye-catching 5.5 yards per carry and remains a threat to break off a big run every time he touches the ball. His speed and shiftiness make him a nightmare for defenses.

On the other hand, Montgomery provides a bruising, reliable complement. Now in his seventh year, he brings experience and physicality that rounds out the backfield.

But it doesn’t stop there—Detroit’s depth is just as notable. Craig Reynolds offers veteran consistency, while rookie Jase McClellan has drawn attention after an impressive stint in the UFL.

Sharp’s rankings also spotlight other top-tier backfields. The Eagles come in second with Saquon Barkley, AJ Dillon, and Will Shipley. The Falcons land at third behind Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier. At fourth, the Ravens boast Derrick Henry, Justice Hill, and Keaton Mitchell. Rounding out the top five, the Dolphins lean on the blazing speed of De’Von Achane, along with Alexander Mattison and Jaylen Wright.
