Bills Toss DE After One Preseason Game, Shuffle the Deck Again
The Buffalo Bills aren’t wasting any time mixing things up on defense — especially when it comes to their pass rush. After just one preseason game, they’ve already made a move, cutting loose a Super Bowl-winning defensive end who barely had time to unpack.
Justin Hollins: Here One Week, Gone the Next
The Bills brought in veteran DE Justin Hollins on August 5. He’s got a ring from his time with the Rams and looked like a decent depth option. But a minor injury threw a wrench in the plan, and just over a week later, Hollins was waived with an injury designation.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the door’s shut forever — if he clears waivers, he could land on Buffalo’s Injured Reserve and maybe circle back later. But for now, he’s out.
Why the Rush Matters
The Bills have had a love-hate relationship with their pass rush lately — mostly hate. It wasn’t clicking in 2024, and the Kansas City Chiefs took full advantage in the AFC Championship loss. So Buffalo’s trying to get things right before Week 1, cycling through options quickly to find the right mix.
Meet Nelson Ceaser
With Hollins out, the Bills didn’t waste time finding a new body. They signed Nelson Ceaser, a 6’3″, 264-pound edge rusher who had a solid college career at Houston. He went undrafted and had a quick stint with the Seahawks before bouncing to the UFL’s San Antonio Brahmas.
Ceaser’s college résumé is no joke — 9.5 sacks in his final season and All-Big 12 honors. Now, he’s trying to turn heads in Buffalo. He also reunites with former Houston teammate Ed Oliver, who’s already anchoring the Bills’ D-line.
Joey Bosa Watch
Speaking of pass rushers, the Bills are also testing out some bigger names. They brought in Joey Bosa this offseason on a one-year deal, and he looked solid in his first preseason appearance — his first in seven years, by the way. He even got his hand on a pass and made some noise in the run game.
Head coach Sean McDermott was pleased: “I thought Joey did some good things in the run game in particular.”
Bosa was happy to just be out there, saying, “Just go out there and play with fundamentals.”
And About Von Miller…
The Bills tried the star power route with Von Miller back in 2022, but that experiment didn’t pan out. After tearing his ACL and struggling to bounce back, the team officially parted ways with the All-Pro this offseason.
