One Underrated Draft Prospect the Detroit Lions Should Target

As the Detroit Lions head into the 2025 NFL Draft, reinforcing their defense is a top priority. With injuries plaguing the defense throughout the previous season, the Lions need to secure a long-term solution, and while top defensive prospects will likely be off the board by the time Detroit picks, one underrated player might still be available: Ohio State’s J.T. Tuimoloau.

Standing at 6’5″ and 269 lbs, Tuimoloau is a versatile player capable of lining up both as a defensive lineman and edge rusher. He had a stellar college career, earning All-Big Ten honors three times and showing off his playmaking ability with 61 tackles, 12.5 sacks, and multiple turnovers in 2024. His standout performance against Penn State in 2022 included two sacks, two interceptions, and a forced fumble—an impressive showcase of his all-around skill.

Tuimoloau could be a great fit for the Lions’ defense under new coordinator Kelvin Sheppard. His versatility would complement Aidan Hutchinson on the edge and, if the Lions re-sign Za’Darius Smith, create a fearsome trio that could help make Detroit’s defense one of the best in the league. Though his teammate Jack Sawyer has garnered more attention, Tuimoloau’s potential could make him a steal late in the first round, and Detroit should consider him if he falls into their lap.
