The Detroit Lions have been one of the league’s hottest teams after shaking off their Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers, but a major injury setback could slow their momentum.

Cornerback D.J. Reed has officially been placed on injured reserve (IR), sidelining the $48 million starter for at least the next four weeks.

“Lions announce roster moves: Placed CB D.J. Reed on Reserve/Injured. Signed S Loren Strickland and LB Ty Summers to the Active Roster from the Practice Squad. Signed CB Tre Flowers and CB Nick Whiteside to the Practice Squad,” the franchise shared Wednesday on its official X account.

Reed hurt his hamstring during last Sunday’s matchup with the Cleveland Browns. At first, he feared the worst.

“Reed didn’t participate in Wednesday’s practice but was spotted in the locker room without a boot or brace on his injured leg. He said he thought he tore a hamstring off the bone, ‘but that’s not the case, thank God. I thought it was a wrap,’” ESPN’s Eric Woodyard reported.

Fortunately, the 28-year-old will not need surgery, which offers hope for his return later this year.

Reed joined Detroit in the offseason after three strong years with the New York Jets. Earlier in his career, he also spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.

Through four games in a Lions uniform, Reed has made his presence felt, recording 16 tackles, four pass breakups, an interception, and a fumble recovery. His current deal keeps him in Detroit through the 2027 season.

The Lions’ cornerback depth is being tested further, as fellow starter Terrion Arnold is also banged up. Arnold injured his shoulder in Week 4, though he was able to return to practice Wednesday in a limited capacity.
