The Mets kept the good vibes going Tuesday night, and once again, Pete Alonso was right in the middle of it. Citi Field was buzzing with chants of “PETE A-LON-SO!” as the slugger stepped up in the seventh inning—and he didn’t disappoint. Alonso ripped a 113.9 mph double to left, pushing the Mets ahead 3-1.
Alonso’s been on fire lately. He’s hitting .349 this season with six homers and 25 RBIs—tied with Aaron Judge for the most in the league. Just in the last five games, he’s 7-for-19 with a homer, triple, two doubles, and four RBIs.
The Mets weren’t done in the seventh. After Alonso’s double, the Phillies walked Mark Vientos and then intentionally walked Jesse Winker to get to Luis Torrens. Bad move. Torrens, after falling behind 0-2 in the count, knocked a bloop single into left to bring in two more runs, putting the Mets up 5-1.
Torrens said it felt good to deliver in a rivalry game. “Always nice to put on a show for the fans,” he said after the win.
Vientos, back in the lineup after sitting out with groin soreness, wasted no time making his presence felt. In the first inning, he ripped a double to left that brought in Juan Soto, putting the Mets on the board early.
Vientos seems to have found his groove—he’s got four extra-base hits and six RBIs in his last seven games, compared to just two extra-base hits in his first 14.
The Phillies tied things up in the second inning after stringing together three straight hits, but that was all they got off Mets starter Griffin Canning. He worked through traffic all night, stranding seven runners and giving up just one run in another solid start.
Francisco Lindor also stayed hot, going 3-for-5. He’s now 8-for-13 over his last three games with three homers and six RBIs. The guy’s clearly locked in.
Canning turned it over to the bullpen, and they shut it down from there. Four relievers combined to toss four scoreless innings and seal the deal.
The Mets are rolling right now—and as long as Alonso keeps mashing, there’s no slowing them down.
