Mason Rudolph’s return to Pittsburgh hasn’t exactly inspired confidence—and Pro Football Focus just put a harsh stamp on that reality. According to PFF’s latest QB rankings, Rudolph is the lowest-rated veteran starter in the league, landing at No. 31 out of 32. The only quarterback ranked below him? New Orleans rookie Tyler Shough.
It’s not a flattering review from PFF’s John Kosko, who points to Rudolph’s underwhelming numbers and limited experience over a seven-year career. He notes Rudolph has only 850 career dropbacks and just 22 “big-time throws” on record, calling him a career backup more than a true starting QB.
Rudolph rejoined the Steelers on a two-year deal after a brief stint with the Titans, but it looks like he may not have a long leash. The team took Kansas State QB Will Howard in the sixth round, and PFF believes it’s likely the rookie sees the field before the season’s over.
There’s still one big wild card—Aaron Rodgers. The veteran QB has been linked to Pittsburgh but hasn’t made a decision. Until he does, Rudolph is penciled in as the starter.
Rudolph’s 2024 campaign wasn’t pretty. He finished 1-4 as a starter, throwing for 1,530 yards, nine touchdowns, and nine interceptions. While his resume doesn’t scream “franchise QB,” he did provide a spark in 2023, helping the Steelers go from 7-7 to 10-7 and make the playoffs. That brief stretch may have bought him some goodwill, but the clock is ticking.
Drafted in the third round back in 2018, Rudolph’s career has been a roller coaster in Pittsburgh. Now in year seven, he faces what could be a make-or-break opportunity—if he can hold off the rookie and any incoming veterans.
