Podcast: Breaking Down the Lions’ First Coordinator Interviews

The Detroit Lions have officially turned the page on last season and are gearing up for a championship push with a revamped coaching staff. Both new coordinators, defensive leader Kelvin Sheppard and offensive mind John Morton, recently shared their visions for the team in interviews with Fox-2 ahead of the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine.

Sheppard, who has been with the team for a few years and learned under former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, is eager to take charge. He has a deep connection to Detroit and head coach Dan Campbell, making this opportunity personal.

“He loves Detroit, he loves working for Dan Campbell, so it’s gonna be exciting to see him as the pilot of that defense,” said podcast co-host Christian Booher.

On the offensive side, Morton is stepping into the coordinator role after spending a year in Detroit. Though his stint as the Jets’ offensive coordinator didn’t go as planned, he’s familiar with Jared Goff and the Lions’ offensive system, which should help him hit the ground running.

“For him, that motivating factor is to bring a championship to his home state,” Booher added. “As a local product, he has a lot of motivation to go out there and help the Lions finish the job.”

With a talented roster already in place, the Lions are fine-tuning things for a legitimate Super Bowl run. One major question remains—could a blockbuster move for Myles Garrett be the final piece to the puzzle? NFL draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah certainly thinks it’s worth exploring, stating that Detroit is in a win-now position and should be aggressive if the opportunity arises.

With the NFL Draft approaching and free agency heating up, the Lions’ front office has some big decisions to make. Whether it’s through new coaching philosophies or a potential star-studded trade, Detroit is determined to make 2025 their year.
