Predicted: Hendon Hooker to Be Traded by Detroit Lions This Offseason

Hendon Hooker Predicted to Be Traded by Detroit Lions

As the Detroit Lions enter the 2025 offseason, the future of backup quarterback Hendon Hooker has come into question. While Jared Goff is firmly entrenched as the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, the backup spot remains uncertain, especially with veteran Teddy Bridgewater set to hit free agency. This uncertainty has sparked speculation that the Lions might look to trade Hooker, their third-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Backup QB Situation

Bridgewater joined the Lions late in the 2024 season to back up Goff, and his experience showed that Hooker’s role wasn’t cemented. Hooker, who was drafted as a developmental prospect, didn’t see much playing time in his rookie season. In fact, he was even inactive during the Lions’ playoff loss to the Washington Commanders, which raised questions about his future in Detroit—especially given Goff’s long-term contract extension.

Why the Lions Could Trade Hendon Hooker

Given the Lions’ strong roster and commitment to Goff as the long-term starter, it seems unlikely Hooker will see significant playing time in the near future. As a result, trading him could be an appealing option. TWSN predicts that the Lions will look to move Hooker this offseason, potentially receiving a fourth-round pick from a team in need of a quarterback. Trading Hooker would allow Detroit to acquire a more experienced backup QB who could step in if Goff were injured, rather than relying on Hooker’s limited experience.

A Fresh Opportunity for Hooker

For Hooker, a trade could provide the opportunity to develop in a new system and potentially earn a starting role elsewhere. While the move would benefit both Hooker and the Lions, it’s also possible Detroit holds onto him unless they receive an offer they can’t refuse. With the Lions focused on their Super Bowl window, adding a more reliable backup could take priority.

Bottom Line

The Lions may move on from Hooker if the right offer comes their way, but unless a compelling trade proposal is made, they might hold onto the young quarterback as insurance. A trade could offer Hooker a chance to grow elsewhere while allowing Detroit to strengthen their backup QB position for 2025.
