Pressure Mounts on Lions’ Ennis Rakestraw to Prove His Worth

Lions’ Second-Year CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr. Facing Big Pressure at Camp

Last year, the Detroit Lions went all-in on fixing their secondary, using their top two draft picks on cornerbacks. First-rounder Terrion Arnold worked out well and locked down a starting job, but second-round pick Ennis Rakestraw Jr. didn’t have the same impact  and now he’s fighting to stay in the mix.

Rakestraw barely saw the field last season thanks to injuries. He only played in eight games and spent most of his time on special teams. Now, according to SI.com’s Vito Chirco, Rakestraw has the most to prove in training camp. He’s got stiff competition from veterans Amik Robertson and Avonte Maddox for the nickel corner role, and he’ll need to really stand out to keep his spot.

Detroit Football Network also pointed out that the coaching staff wants to use Rakestraw as an outside corner this year, so he’ll need to show he can step up if Arnold or DJ Reed goes down. He’ll probably get a lot of reps in the preseason to prove he’s ready.

On the Flip Side: Terrion Arnold is Thriving

Meanwhile, Arnold had a strong rookie year   starting 15 games, making 60 tackles, and breaking up 10 passes. Defensive backs coach Deshea Townsend said all that playing time helped him learn fast and figure out how to adjust his game.

Townsend also praised Arnold for working hard this offseason to improve on his weaknesses, saying he’s showing the kind of commitment it takes to be great.

So while Arnold’s trending up, Rakestraw enters a make-or-break summer. If he doesn’t show real progress in camp, he might fall further down the depth chart   or off it entirely.
