Franchise Frustrations Could Lead to a Surprising Exit
The Los Angeles Rams have a major decision to make regarding veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, and according to recent reports, patience within the organization may be wearing thin. While Stafford has made it clear that he intends to continue playing in 2025, the Rams’ front office appears less certain about his future in L.A.
Now, new insider reports suggest that frustrations with Stafford—and his outspoken wife, Kelly—could push the Rams toward a major shake-up at quarterback.
Stafford Wearing Out His Welcome?
On a February 13 episode of The Herd, sports personality Colin Cowherd revealed some behind-the-scenes rumblings about Stafford’s status with the Rams. According to Cowherd, the team is growing increasingly frustrated with the ongoing quarterback chatter surrounding Stafford, along with comments made by his wife on her podcast.
“The Rams like Matt Stafford, but they’re tiring of the constant quarterback talk, his wife saying things publicly,” Cowherd stated. He also pointed to the controversy surrounding wide receiver Cooper Kupp, saying, “They’re not real happy with Cooper Kupp going public with something they tried to keep quiet.”
The issue reportedly stems from Kelly Stafford’s recent remarks about Kupp being informed that the Rams were considering trading him—a revelation the front office had hoped to keep private. With tensions rising, Cowherd suggested that the Rams are hesitant to extend or restructure Stafford’s contract, despite his desire to stay.
Could Stafford Land in New York?
With Los Angeles showing reluctance to commit to Stafford long-term, trade speculation is heating up. Cowherd even floated the possibility of Stafford being dealt to the New York Giants, who are desperate to upgrade at quarterback.
“The Giants don’t like this quarterback class,” he explained. “Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen have got to win or they’ll be fired by Thanksgiving. They’re gonna get run out of the building. They are going to make a move, I believe, on Matt Stafford.”
This potential move aligns with the Giants’ urgent need for a veteran quarterback to stabilize their offense. However, whether Stafford would be open to such a move remains to be seen.
Kelly Stafford Fuels Trade Speculation
Kelly Stafford has never been shy about speaking her mind, and her latest podcast comments have only added to the uncertainty surrounding her husband’s future in L.A.
“I honestly wasn’t planning on discussing this, but hell, why not,” she said on the February 6 episode of The Morning After. “My husband, like, wants to win. He’s not trying to put a team in a bad situation. If you’re catching my drift, you’re catching my drift.”
She also hinted at embracing the possibility of leaving Los Angeles, saying, “I love the city of L.A., but I also love an adventure.”
Rams Facing Tough Financial Choices
The Rams’ hesitancy to commit to Stafford isn’t just about locker room dynamics—it’s also a financial decision. The veteran quarterback is set to carry a $49.6 million cap hit in 2025. If the Rams were to trade him after June 1, they could save $27 million; a pre-June 1 trade would still free up $23 million.
With Stafford’s contract situation, the Rams’ frustrations, and trade rumors swirling, the quarterback’s future in Los Angeles is anything but certain. If tensions continue to rise, the once-unthinkable scenario of Stafford wearing a different uniform in 2025 could become reality.
