The Detroit Lions’ search for an edge rusher has been a major topic of discussion. According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the Lions have the cap space to make a big-time edge rush move, but it’s unlikely they’ll take that approach.
Instead, Graziano suggests that the Lions will likely opt for a lower-risk, lower-reward option. This might involve bringing back Za’Darius Smith, who had a solid season with the Lions in 2024.
Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions’ star defensive end, has expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of playing alongside Smith again. Hutchinson believes that the two of them would form a “deadly” combination.
The Lions have been linked to several edge rushers, including Myles Garrett and Maxx Crosby. However, it’s unclear whether the team is willing to give up the draft capital required to acquire one of these players.
Ultimately, the Lions’ approach to finding an edge rusher will likely be cautious and strategic. As Graziano notes, the team has a clear need for pass-rushing help, but they’re unlikely to make a splashy move that compromises their long-term goals.
