The race for one of Alabama’s premier high school linebackers is intensifying as LSU and the Arkansas Razorbacks continue their aggressive pursuit of the standout defender ahead of a crucial decision deadline.
Malik Henderson, a four-star linebacker out of Montgomery’s Carver High School, has quickly become one of the most sought-after defensive prospects in the South. Known for his sideline-to-sideline range, hard-hitting tackles, and instinctive play recognition, Henderson has drawn interest from across the SEC. But in recent weeks, LSU and Arkansas have emerged as the top contenders for his commitment.
> “This is a true SEC battle,” one recruiting analyst said. “Both schools are putting their best pitches forward, and Malik has been receptive to both staffs.”
Henderson, ranked among the top 10 linebackers in the 2026 class, visited both Baton Rouge and Fayetteville this spring. His LSU trip included a lengthy sit-down with defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who emphasized Henderson’s potential fit in the Tigers’ fast, attacking scheme. Meanwhile, Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman and DC Travis Williams rolled out the red carpet during his visit, highlighting immediate playing opportunities and the Razorbacks’ revamped defensive vision.
> “Both coaching staffs made me feel like a priority,” Henderson said in a recent interview. “It’s going to be a tough decision. I’m looking for the right fit—somewhere I can develop and help win championships.”
Sources close to Henderson say the linebacker has narrowed his choices and plans to announce a decision by the end of July. Alabama, Auburn, and Florida were in the mix early on, but the focus now appears to be squarely on LSU and Arkansas.
Recruiting experts believe LSU may have a slight edge due to its history of producing elite linebackers and sending defenders to the NFL. However, Arkansas’s player development pitch and the promise of being a centerpiece in a rebuilding defense has kept them firmly in contention.
> “Don’t count out Arkansas,” said a 247Sports analyst. “They’ve done a great job building a relationship with Malik and his family. This one could come down to the wire.”
Henderson’s decision is expected to have a ripple effect on the 2026 recruiting cycle, as his choice could influence several other regional prospects.
As the summer heats up, so does the recruiting war between two SEC rivals, both hungry to land one of Alabama’s best. One thing is certain—wherever Henderson lands, he’ll be a game-changer on Saturdays.
