Former Eagles Head Coach Returns to the NFL After Nearly a Decade

Chip Kelly is making his long-awaited return to the NFL. According to an ESPN report, the former Philadelphia Eagles head coach has been tapped to join Pete Carroll’s staff as the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders.

A Return to the Pros

Kelly, now 61, last coached in the NFL in 2016, when he had a short-lived stint with the San Francisco 49ers. Before that, he spent three seasons as the Eagles’ head coach from 2013 to 2015. His tenure in Philadelphia started on a high note, but his push for greater control over personnel decisions led to a swift decline.

After departing from the NFL, Kelly found success at the college level. He coached UCLA from 2018 to 2023 before taking over as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator in 2024. His most recent achievement came as a key figure on Ryan Day’s coaching staff, where he helped lead the Buckeyes to a national championship.

Can Kelly Adapt to the Evolving NFL?

While Kelly’s innovative offensive schemes once made waves in the NFL, the league quickly adjusted to his style of play before he returned to the college ranks. His upcoming role with the Raiders will test whether he can reinvent his approach and find success at the pro level again.

One of the most anticipated moments of Kelly’s return will come in 2025 when the Raiders travel to Philadelphia. It will mark his first game at Lincoln Financial Field since his departure from the Eagles nearly a decade ago. Whether he can redeem his NFL legacy remains to be seen, but his return is sure to generate plenty of intrigue.
