Report: Eagles Cut Future Hall of Famer—5 Teams That Could Sign Him

The Philadelphia Eagles have officially released veteran cornerback Darius Slay, allowing the six-time Pro Bowler to test free agency. Slay, who played a key role in Philadelphia’s defense, was expected to be cut due to the team’s depth at the position, with young talents like Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell making him expendable. Now, the 33-year-old is looking for one more opportunity to compete before likely retiring—and a return to Detroit is on the table.

Originally drafted by the Lions in 2013, Slay developed into one of the league’s top cornerbacks during his seven seasons in Detroit. However, the Lions traded him to the Eagles in 2020, where he went on to win a Super Bowl. With Detroit’s secondary struggling last season due to injuries and inconsistency, Slay could provide much-needed veteran leadership. The team is expected to explore all options, especially with Carlton Davis set to hit free agency.

While Detroit is considered the most logical landing spot, other teams could be in the mix. The Baltimore Ravens need a boost in their secondary, the Chargers have money to spend and could use a veteran leader, and the Commanders are looking to revamp their defense after trading for Deebo Samuel. Meanwhile, the Chiefs, who lost L’Jarius Sneed, could bring in Slay to maintain their defensive strength.

Slay has made it clear he’s open to a reunion with the Lions, and with Detroit pushing for a Super Bowl run, adding a proven veteran to the secondary could be the right move. Now, it’s up to the front office to decide if the timing—and the price—makes sense.
