Detroit Lions Finally Land ‘Genius’ RB Coach Tashard Choice
Dan Campbell has been a fan of Tashard Choice for years, and now he’s finally got him on board. The Detroit Lions have officially hired Choice as their new running backs coach, adding a respected developer of talent to their staff.
“He’s somebody that’s done a really good job developing backs wherever he’s been,” Campbell said at the NFL Combine. “Two years ago, I know that he was somebody that was on my radar and it didn’t work out… but everything comes back around, and it just felt like this was right.”
Choice, 40, played in the NFL for six seasons before transitioning into coaching. His career started with an internship in Dallas, followed by stints at North Texas, Georgia Tech, and most recently, Texas. Over the years, he’s built a strong reputation for mentoring running backs, including Detroit’s own Jahmyr Gibbs when he was at Georgia Tech.
Beyond his coaching ability, Choice is known for his leadership and impact off the field. Texas running back Jaydon Blue credited him for shaping his game and character: “That’s my dog. He not only made me a better player off the field, but on the field.”
Lions GM Brad Holmes also expressed excitement about the hire, admitting he never thought they’d be able to land Choice. Now, the Lions’ backfield duo of Gibbs and David Montgomery will have one of the most respected RB coaches in college football guiding them.
With Choice in the mix, could Detroit’s ground game take another leap forward in 2025?
