Report: Mets, Braves Eyeing Padres’ Starting Pitchers
Mets and Braves Show Interest in Padres’ Rotation Arms
The New York Mets and Atlanta Braves are reportedly eyeing two of the San Diego Padres’ top starting pitchers, Dylan Cease and Michael King. Both pitchers had strong performances last season, making them valuable trade targets as teams look to solidify their rotations for the upcoming season.
According to Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, the Mets have already engaged in discussions with the Padres regarding both pitchers, while the Braves have also emerged as a potential suitor. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic previously reported that San Diego was open to trading King, further fueling speculation about a potential deal.
Padres Pitchers Drawing Trade Buzz
Michael King: A Breakout Arm in Demand
Michael King enjoyed a breakout 2024 season, making him an attractive target for teams seeking rotation depth. At 29 years old, King has six years of MLB experience and is under team control for just one more season before becoming a free agent.
His strong numbers last year—13 wins, a 2.95 ERA, and a 1.192 WHIP—demonstrate his ability to be a reliable starter. Advanced metrics from Baseball Savant further highlight his strengths, including an elite average exit velocity of 85.7 mph and an excellent hard-hit rate of just 30.3%.
For the Mets and Braves, adding King would provide flexibility without committing to a long-term contract. The Mets, in particular, have been aggressive in their offseason moves, including the record-breaking signing of Juan Soto. King could be a valuable piece in their pursuit of pitching stability.
Dylan Cease: A High-Velocity Strikeout Machine
Like King, Dylan Cease is also 29 and boasts an impressive skill set. Cease finished last season with a 14-11 record, a 3.47 ERA, and a 1.067 WHIP. His ability to generate strikeouts—29.4% strikeout rate—makes him a compelling option for any contending team.
His 96.9 mph fastball and elite breaking ball effectiveness (17-run value) make him a particularly strong fit for the Braves, who could benefit from his high-powered arsenal. Cease also has just one year of team control remaining, meaning any acquiring team would not be locked into a long-term deal.
For Atlanta, trading for Cease would mean adding a frontline starter without making a lengthy financial commitment. Additionally, the Georgia-born pitcher could find extra motivation playing closer to home.
Will the Padres Make a Move?
The Padres have had a relatively quiet offseason, but interest in Cease and King could change that. While both pitchers are valuable assets, San Diego could use this opportunity to acquire young talent in return, particularly if they decide to retool their roster.
With the Mets and Braves actively exploring options, it will be interesting to see if a deal materializes before the season begins.
