The New York Jets have yet to officially decide what to do with Aaron Rodgers, but the signs point to the team parting ways with the quarterback this offseason. It seems like the franchise is ready to move on from the Rodgers era, planning for a fresh start with new leadership in the form of a new quarterback, head coach, and general manager.
That said, this plan might still change, especially now that the Dallas Cowboys have moved on from their head coach, Mike McCarthy. According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, during an appearance on Don, Hahn & Rosenberg on Tuesday, McCarthy “would be interested” in discussing the Jets’ head coaching position.
Cimini also mentioned that McCarthy would likely be “intrigued” by the opportunity to reunite with Rodgers, whom he coached for many years in Green Bay. However, while McCarthy is clearly interested, a reunion with Rodgers on the Jets doesn’t seem to be in the cards at this point.
Jets Not Interested in a Rodgers-McCarthy Reunion
Despite McCarthy’s apparent interest in the Jets’ job, the feeling doesn’t seem to be mutual. Cimini reported that he doesn’t believe the Jets are keen on hiring McCarthy, echoing a report from Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, who also doesn’t expect the team to pursue the former Packers coach.
McCarthy spent five seasons as the head coach of the Cowboys, where he posted a regular-season record of 49-35 and a postseason record of 1-3. Dallas had some successful years under his leadership, winning 12 or more games in three of those five seasons.
Despite his tenure with the Cowboys, it seems McCarthy’s future may lie elsewhere. Several other NFL teams are expected to show interest in him, with the New Orleans Saints reportedly the most likely suitor. While the Jets may not be considering McCarthy, his firing could still have an indirect impact on their coaching search.
The Jets are reportedly in a competitive race with the Saints to hire Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, which could open the door for McCarthy to land in New Orleans. This could allow the Jets to focus on securing their preferred head coach without the McCarthy option on the table.
For Jets fans hoping for a reunion between McCarthy and Rodgers, it seems that dream will remain unfulfilled. The Jets are looking to move past the Rodgers era, likely parting ways with several of his close associates in the process.
The Jets are not looking to bring in more figures associated with Rodgers in hopes of running things back in 2025. By all indications, owner Woody Johnson and the Jets organization are ready to usher in a new era, with a new quarterback leading the way.
That doesn’t rule out McCarthy reuniting with Rodgers elsewhere. If McCarthy ends up with the Saints, there’s a chance Rodgers could follow as a potential replacement for Derek Carr—if he’s willing to sign a team-friendly contract.
In any case, it’s safe to say that neither McCarthy nor Rodgers will be part of the Jets’ plans in 2025. The reunion simply isn’t happening at Florham Park.
