Report: NFL Hands Down Punishment to Two Vikings Players Before Lions Matchup

Two Minnesota defenders face hefty fines just days before the NFC North showdown against the Detroit Lions.

The Detroit Lions return from their bye week with fresh energy and focus, set to host the Minnesota Vikings in a high-stakes NFC North clash at Ford Field on Sunday, November 2. While Detroit looks to build on its strong 5–2 start, the Vikings find themselves battling to stay relevant in the divisional race.

But as the Vikings prepare for this crucial matchup, they’ve been hit with some unwanted news — the NFL has officially handed down fines to two of their defensive starters for actions stemming from Week 8.

NFL Discipline Targets Two Vikings Defenders

According to the league’s official report released on Saturday, November 1, linebackers Blake Cashman and Dallas Turner have both been fined for conduct violations during last week’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Cashman was hit with a $23,186 fine for “unnecessary roughness” and “use of the helmet,” while Turner was fined $19,907 for “unnecessary roughness” and “launch.”

The NFL clarified in its report that these weekly disciplinary actions are intended “to protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity.” League staff members review all flagged plays that may have warranted additional scrutiny before issuing such punishments.

While neither player faces suspension, the timing of the fines — right before a divisional showdown — adds another layer of distraction for a Vikings team already dealing with injuries and inconsistency.

Vikings’ Quarterback Carousel Continues

The Vikings have faced no shortage of adversity this season, particularly at the quarterback position. With Carson Wentz ruled out for the year after suffering a season-ending injury against the Chargers, rookie J.J. McCarthy will return from his own five-game absence to start against the Lions.

McCarthy’s upcoming start will be only his third in the NFL after missing nearly all of his rookie campaign in 2024. The Vikings also have undrafted rookie Max Brosmer and veteran John Wolford available. Wolford, who recently joined Minnesota’s practice squad, has history with head coach Kevin O’Connell, dating back to their shared time with the Los Angeles Rams during their 2021 Super Bowl run.

As ESPN’s Kevin Seifert noted on X, “They were together with the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 and 2021, and there have been previous failed efforts to get him to Minnesota.”

Detroit Ready to Test Minnesota’s Depth

The Lions, led by head coach Dan Campbell, enter the matchup rested and determined following a 24–9 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in primetime before their bye. Their defense has been among the most physical in the league — something that could prove challenging for a Vikings team adjusting to a reshuffled lineup and now missing some momentum due to the league’s latest disciplinary action.

With playoff implications already creeping into focus, this divisional meeting could play a pivotal role in shaping the NFC North standings. And if Detroit continues its current form, the Vikings’ uphill climb could get even steeper.

The Bottom Line

The NFL’s fines for Blake Cashman and Dallas Turner serve as an untimely setback for a Minnesota team trying to regain its footing. Meanwhile, the Lions appear poised to capitalize on any opening.

When the two teams meet at Ford Field, expect physicality, emotion — and perhaps a few more storylines before the final whistle blows.
