Retirement and Expiry: Commanders’ Mayhew Steps Down, Hurney’s Contract Ends

Commanders’ Martin Mayhew Retires, Marty Hurney Moves On as Contract Expires

Big changes are happening with the Washington Commanders. Martin Mayhew, a key figure in the team’s recent rebuild, has announced his retirement after a long NFL career. Mayhew, who was once part of the 1991 Washington team that made it to the NFC Championship, has spent over two decades in front offices, including stints as the GM for both the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders.

Mayhew, who will turn 60 later this year, retired after serving as a senior personnel executive in 2024. While his tenure with Washington as GM didn’t bring consistent success, he was instrumental in assembling the team that made its first NFC Championship appearance since 1991.

As for Marty Hurney, his contract with the team expired, and he’s moving on as well. Hurney, 69, had a lengthy career, with previous GM roles in Carolina. He helped build the Panthers’ Super Bowl contender in 2003 and returned to the Panthers’ GM position in 2017. While not technically fired, his departure from the Commanders marks the end of an era for both him and Mayhew.

Mayhew, after moving from player to front-office roles, has been a prominent name in NFL personnel for nearly 30 years. His time with the Lions was a major chapter, where he helped guide the team out of its dark years post-2008. However, his greatest success came with the San Francisco 49ers, where he helped build the NFC Championship team in 2019.

Hurney’s future is still uncertain—whether he’ll retire for good or look for another opportunity in the NFL remains to be seen. But both men leave behind a legacy of shaping NFL rosters and contributing to teams that reached the heights of competition.
