Ex-Detroit WR DJ Chark visits Chicago Bears amid ties to new head coach Ben Johnson

Former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, now leading the Chicago Bears, who is reportedly eyeing a reunion with a former Detroit wideout.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, wide receiver DJ Chark recently visited the Bears, with Johnson reportedly showing interest in bringing his former deep threat to Chicago. This move could signal a strategic effort to build familiarity in his new offensive system.
DJ Chark: A Proven Vertical Threat
Chark’s 2022 stint with the Lions showcased his knack for stretching the field. In just 11 games (10 starts), the LSU product reeled in 30 receptions for 502 yards and three touchdowns — an impressive 16.7 yards per catch. His chemistry with Johnson’s playcalling was evident, giving the Bears reason to explore a potential deal.
Though Chark later moved on to the Panthers and Chargers, lingering injuries have limited his availability and contributed to his current free agent status. Despite that, his 6-foot-3 frame, top-end speed, and ball-tracking skills continue to make him a compelling option for depth-starved teams.
Chark Weighs His Options
When asked about his future, Chark told Kyle Odegard of Sports Casting, “It will have to be something that makes sense, from a family perspective and also from an X’s and O’s perspective.” His measured response suggests he’s in no rush — but Chicago’s familiarity might be exactly what tips the scales.
The Bears have their starting receiver core in place but are actively seeking experienced backups to stabilize their depth chart. With Johnson at the helm, the interest in Chark is as much about system fit as it is about reliability — both traits the veteran wideout offers when healthy.
