FRISCO – The Dallas Cowboys have made a surprising move by naming Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach, leaving former assistant Kellen Moore sidelined.
The decision reportedly left Moore shocked and disappointed. Schottenheimer, who had been serving as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator, was promoted over Moore, one of four candidates interviewed for the job. This unexpected choice has raised questions, with three main factors standing out as reasons behind the decision.
Reason 1: Timing and Impatience
Moore is currently coaching with the Eagles as they prepare for the NFC Championship Game. Some speculate—though it seems unlikely—that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones were unwilling to wait for Moore’s availability before making a decision. While this reasoning feels hasty, it has been floated as a potential factor.
Reason 2: Contrasting Coaching Styles
Moore’s coaching personality appears to have played a role. Known for his sharp intellect and meticulous preparation, Moore comes across as a “professorial” figure. His success in Dallas as an assistant coach under Jason Garrett and Mike McCarthy proved his ability to develop strategy and execute game plans.
However, as ESPN’s Ed Werder pointed out, Schottenheimer’s leadership style might have given him the edge. “They viewed (Schottenheimer’s) personality as more capable of commanding the room in terms of demanding accountability and establishing leadership (than Moore’s),” Werder wrote. Schottenheimer, it seems, is more of a “drill sergeant,” a trait that may have resonated with the Cowboys’ decision-makers.
Reason 3: A Surprising Outcome
Moore was reportedly confident about his chances, believing he was the frontrunner for the job. His familiarity with the organization and track record with quarterback Dak Prescott seemed like strong advantages. Yet, the Joneses opted for Schottenheimer, a move that surprised many.
At 52, Schottenheimer, like Moore (36), has no prior head coaching experience. Both candidates were considered safe bets to provide continuity and comfort for Prescott. Jerry Jones was clear in his endorsement of the new head coach, stating, “Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant. He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”
What’s Next for Moore?
Though disappointed, Moore’s career isn’t stalling. He’s a candidate for the New Orleans Saints head coaching job, where he might face competition from none other than Mike McCarthy, the man who once overshadowed him in Dallas. For now, however, Moore remains labeled as a “career assistant.”
