Lions May Target Trey Smith to Replace Kevin Zeitler on Offensive Line
As the Detroit Lions work to maintain a high-performing offensive line, one of their key decisions this offseason will be whether to re-sign veteran guard Kevin Zeitler. Having signed a one-year contract last season, Zeitler played at a high level, posting a career-best 87.2 run-blocking grade according to Pro Football Focus. However, with Zeitler’s contract expiring as he heads into his age-35 season, the Lions are weighing their options at right guard.
A strong candidate to replace Zeitler is Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith, who has quickly become one of the most durable and effective guards in the league. Over his four seasons, Smith has missed just one start, and his 2024 season was highlighted by not allowing a single sack, showcasing his dominance in pass protection. He also excels in the run game, demonstrating agility and quickness in reaching the second level.
Smith is projected to be one of the top free-agent targets this offseason, and with Zeitler potentially moving on, the Lions could make a significant push to sign him. If they do, Smith could emerge as one of the league’s highest-paid guards, potentially surpassing Landon Dickerson’s current $21 million per year.
However, Detroit also has young depth in Christian Mahogany, who started two games as a rookie and earned a solid 91.5 overall offensive grade. If Zeitler departs and the Lions miss out on Smith, Mahogany could step into the starting role at right guard after a full offseason to develop. Additionally, the Lions may look to the 2025 NFL Draft for more potential replacements, with Alabama’s Tyler Booker among the top prospects.
In the event of a big free-agent acquisition like Smith, Mahogany could then compete with Graham Glasgow for the starting left guard spot, after Glasgow struggled in his first year under a three-year, $20 million contract extension.
The decision on the offensive line will play a crucial role in Detroit’s continued success, especially with the dual priority of protecting their quarterback and maximizing the effectiveness of their dynamic running back duo.
