Pittsburgh’s Search for a Long-Term Answer at Quarterback Continues
The Pittsburgh Steelers entered last season with high hopes after acquiring both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, aiming to solidify their future at quarterback. However, the plan did not unfold as expected, leaving the team with more uncertainty as they head into another pivotal offseason.
A Season of Ups and Downs
Wilson was initially slated to lead the team, but a calf injury early in the season opened the door for Fields. The young quarterback took full advantage, leading Pittsburgh to a promising 4-2 start. Just as momentum seemed to be on his side, Wilson returned, delivering an impressive stretch with seven wins in eight games.
At one point, it appeared that the Steelers’ offseason gamble had paid off. They sat atop the AFC North, and Wilson publicly expressed his desire to remain in Pittsburgh long-term. But a disastrous four-game losing streak to close the regular season, followed by an early playoff exit, has once again left the franchise in search of stability at the most important position on the field.
Wilson Focused on Pittsburgh
Amid rumors linking him to a reunion with former coach Pete Carroll in Las Vegas, Wilson has made it clear where his attention lies. “I’m focused on the Steelers,” he stated, as reported by ProFootballTalk’s Josh Alper.
Despite reported tensions with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, Wilson remains in “ongoing conversations” with the Steelers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Any internal disagreements are not expected to prevent a potential re-signing, per Mark Kaboly of The Pat McAfee Show.
Fields’ Future Remains Uncertain
While Pittsburgh is still open to bringing Fields back, the young quarterback is expected to have suitors beyond the Steelers, according to Schefter. If he does return, Fields would likely face competition—either from a rookie or another free agent signing—suggesting that Pittsburgh is keeping all options open.
What’s Next for the Steelers?
With no definitive franchise quarterback emerging from last season, Pittsburgh must now weigh its options carefully. They hold the 21st overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, but landing an elite prospect at that spot could require a significant trade-up.
The Steelers also have the financial flexibility to explore free agency, with names like Sam Darnold and even Aaron Rodgers being potential targets. However, Rodgers’ outspoken personality and strong presence in the locker room could present challenges in working alongside head coach Mike Tomlin.
For now, Wilson remains committed to Pittsburgh, but the Steelers’ quarterback situation remains anything but settled. As the offseason unfolds, the team must decide whether Wilson, Fields, or another option will lead them into the future.
