Russell Wilson is on the move again—this time to the Big Apple. The former Seahawks star, who’s had a rocky few years bouncing between Denver and Pittsburgh, signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants and is already making it clear: He’s here to start.
“I expect to be the starter and to be able to come here and rock and roll every day,” Wilson said in a Zoom call after officially inking his contract.
The deal is reportedly worth up to $21 million, with $10.5 million guaranteed. Wilson joins a QB room that includes Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito, and with the Giants holding the No. 3 pick in next month’s draft, there’s still a chance they bring in another young quarterback.
But Wilson isn’t worried.
“The great part about professional sports is constant change, constant movement,” he said. “If we draft a quarterback, we’ll make sure he’s ready. But my focus is on winning.”
Wilson is coming off a season with the Steelers where he posted solid numbers—2,482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 96.5 passer rating—but a late-season collapse led Pittsburgh to move on. While there were whispers about a possible return, the Steelers ultimately let him walk, and now he’s gearing up for a fresh start in New York.
After signing, Wilson wasted no time embracing the city. He was spotted courtside at a Knicks game, sitting next to actor Matthew Modine, tossing a signed football into the stands to the delight of the MSG crowd.
New York’s MetLife Stadium holds a special place in Wilson’s heart—it’s where he won his lone Super Bowl with the Seahawks in 2014. Now, he’s hoping to make new memories in the same building, this time in Giants blue.
“I’ve been fortunate to do some great things in this league,” Wilson said. “But now it’s about what we can do here. This team, this city—it’s a special place, and I can’t wait to get to work.”
