Russell Wilson Joins Giants, But Critics Aren’t Impressed

The New York Giants made a big move by signing quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal, but not everyone is thrilled about it. NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt, usually an energetic and upbeat analyst, wasn’t exactly throwing a celebration party over the signing.

Brandt, known for his passionate football takes, didn’t hold back when discussing Wilson’s arrival in New York. “I don’t want to be the Debbie Downer here, but let’s not pretend this is some amazing move,” he said.

His reasoning? Wilson wasn’t exactly a hot commodity in free agency. In fact, Brandt pointed out that former Giants QB Daniel Jones had more interest on the market and even landed a bigger paycheck with the Colts. According to him, the Giants only went after Wilson because they couldn’t get Matthew Stafford or Aaron Rodgers.

Wilson’s last season was a rollercoaster. He started strong with the Steelers, winning six of his first seven games and throwing 16 touchdowns to just five interceptions. But things went downhill fast—five straight losses (including a playoff flop) later, and Pittsburgh was ready to move on.

Brandt did acknowledge that Wilson’s contract—$10.5 million with the potential to hit $21 million through incentives—wasn’t a terrible deal. He’s an experienced veteran and clearly an upgrade over backup Jameis Winston. Plus, his presence allows the Giants to skip drafting a quarterback with their No. 3 overall pick.

That said, the reality isn’t pretty. Wilson will be stepping into a Giants offense that might have the worst QB situation in the NFC East—and arguably one of the weakest supporting casts in the league. Brandt isn’t convinced it’ll work out.

“I’ve seen this movie before,” he said. “I hope it works, but I can’t stand here and say I think it will.”

So while the Giants have their guy for now, the big question remains—will Wilson be able to prove the doubters wrong?
