Russell Wilson Reflects on Steelers’ Pursuit of Aaron Rodgers
Russell Wilson may be the New York Giants’ newest quarterback, but his departure from the Pittsburgh Steelers still looms large. During his introductory press conference, Wilson was asked about the Steelers’ decision to pursue Aaron Rodgers instead of re-signing him. While he kept his response diplomatic, his words carried weight.
“Aaron Rodgers is a tremendous football player,” Wilson said. “I’m focused on right now. What we can do here. That’s been my focus.”
Despite moving on, Wilson spoke fondly of his time in Pittsburgh, specifically mentioning his close bonds with teammates like T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, and Miles Killebrew. “Pittsburgh brought me so much love, man. I have so many teammates that I’m super close with,” he said.
Wilson had hoped to stay with the Steelers but ultimately chose the Giants on a one-year deal. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s quarterback situation remains uncertain. Their pursuit of Rodgers is ongoing, but with no guarantee he’ll sign—or even play in 2025—the team could be left scrambling for a solution.
If Rodgers doesn’t land in Pittsburgh, Mason Rudolph may be the frontrunner for the starting job, as the Steelers reportedly have no plans to draft a quarterback in the first round. With the NFL Draft fast approaching, the team needs to make a decision soon.
