Sam LaPorta Reveals Painful Back Injury That Cut His 2025 Season Short

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has finally opened up about the injury that quietly brought his 2025 season to an early and frustrating end — and it was far more serious than many fans realized at the time.
LaPorta revealed that a lingering back injury became increasingly difficult to manage as the season progressed, ultimately forcing the Lions’ medical staff and coaching staff to shut him down. What initially appeared to be something he could “play through” never truly healed, and continuing to push only made the situation worse.
According to LaPorta, the injury affected everything from his ability to explode out of breaks to absorbing contact after catches. Even routine movements became uncomfortable, and the pain lingered throughout the week, not just on game days. For a player whose game relies heavily on leverage, strength, and sudden movement, the back issue became impossible to ignore.
Despite the setback, LaPorta emphasized that the decision to end his season early was made with the long-term future in mind. The Lions viewed him as a foundational piece of the offense, and risking further damage made little sense once postseason hopes began to fade. Shutting him down now gives him a full offseason to recover, rehab, and reset physically.
The timing was especially frustrating given LaPorta’s importance to Detroit’s offense. He had become a security blanket for Jared Goff, a mismatch in the red zone, and one of the team’s most reliable weapons in critical moments. Losing him not only changed the offensive structure but also forced younger players into expanded roles late in the year.
Looking ahead, LaPorta remains optimistic. He said the injury is not expected to impact his long-term career, and he’s already focused on a complete recovery ahead of offseason training. With proper rest and rehab, the expectation is that he’ll return at full strength when the Lions begin preparations for the 2026 season.
For Detroit, LaPorta’s health will be a major storyline this offseason. With coaching changes underway and questions surrounding the offense’s direction, having a fully healthy Sam LaPorta could be one of the biggest reasons for optimism heading into next year.
One thing is clear: this wasn’t just a minor setback. It was a tough, painful decision — but one the Lions believe will pay off in the long run.
