The New England Patriots made a pretty surprising move on Thursday, trading backup QB Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys. Milton, who had a solid college career and showed promise in the preseason and even started a game late last season, became a hot prospect. With Drake Maye now the QB of the future in New England, the Patriots decided to trade Milton, who many teams had their eyes on. In return, the Patriots got a fifth-round pick and sent Milton along with a seventh-round pick to the Cowboys.
But here’s the twist: according to Fox Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, Dallas wasn’t the only team after Milton. In fact, they didn’t even have the best offer. It turns out, the Cowboys sent Milton to a team he actually wanted to go to. Four other teams made a play for Milton, and the most surprising of those was the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles, who recently traded backup QB Kenny Pickett to the Browns, were looking to strengthen their depth behind star QB Jalen Hurts. They’re now relying on Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who came over in the Pickett trade, and Tanner McKee as Hurts’ backups.
Along with the Eagles, the New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers were also reportedly interested in Milton, likely due to their own quarterback situations this offseason.
