Sheriff’s Office Joins the Pride: Alpena Backs Detroit’s Historic Run!

The Detroit Lions’ remarkable season has sparked excitement well beyond the football field, reaching even the Alpena County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Erik Smith has allowed deputies, corrections officers, and other employees to wear Lions hats as part of their uniforms, showing solidarity with the team’s historic push for a Super Bowl title.

Morale Boost for the Department

Sheriff Smith emphasized that the move is about more than just supporting the Lions—it’s also about lifting spirits within his department. Amid challenging times, including discussions of budget cuts and potential layoffs, Smith said fostering a lighter, more unified atmosphere has helped morale.

“This could be a once-in-a-lifetime thing for [Lions fans], so I decided to let them celebrate the team’s success,” Smith said.

Smith, a lifelong Lions fan, likened his department to the team, noting both have faced challenges but continue working hard to succeed.

A Record-Breaking Season

The Lions clinched the NFC’s top playoff seed for the first time in franchise history with a record-breaking 15-2 season. The team will host its first playoff game next weekend, with their opponent to be determined.

Sheriff Smith believes the Lions’ grit and determination mirror the qualities his team strives for daily.

“Sometimes, determination is more powerful than skill. The Lions have both,” Smith said, adding he’s confident the team can win the Super Bowl.

Community and Team Spirit

The decision to allow Lions hats has been well-received, fostering a sense of unity among employees and the local community. Smith’s comparison of his role to Lions coach Dan Campbell’s leadership shows his focus on building a motivated, resilient team.

With the Super Bowl set for February 9 in New Orleans, Lions fans everywhere—including those in Alpena—are savoring this extraordinary season and hoping to see their underdog team achieve football’s greatest honor.
