The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett in 2022 with hopes he would be the next franchise quarterback to replace Ben Roethlisberger. However, just three seasons later, Pickett is a Super Bowl champion—though not with Pittsburgh.
After being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason, Pickett was part of the team that defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. While his role in the game was minimal, he took the final kneel-down to seal the 40-22 victory, marking a bittersweet moment for Steelers fans.
Pickett’s Steelers Tenure & Exit
Pickett’s time in Pittsburgh was underwhelming. In two seasons, he posted a 14-10 record, throwing 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, averaging 6.3 yards per attempt. By the 2023 Wild Card Round, the Steelers had benched him in favor of Mason Rudolph, signaling the end of his tenure.
Amid changes to Pittsburgh’s quarterback room, Pickett requested a trade, ultimately landing in Philadelphia. In return, the Steelers received the 98th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, selecting promising linebacker Payton Wilson—a deal the organization was happy to make.
A Super Bowl Win, but Not for Pittsburgh
Despite his struggles in Pittsburgh, Pickett still played a part in his hometown team’s championship run. He was joined by former Steelers Fred Johnson, Le’Raven Clark, and Braden Mann as they celebrated under the New Orleans lights.
While Steelers fans may have mixed feelings about Pickett’s success elsewhere, his journey highlights the challenges of replacing a franchise legend. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh looks ahead, now reportedly targeting veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to lead the team forward.
