Art Rooney II: Steelers Willing to Wait for Aaron Rodgers, But ‘Not Forever’
The Pittsburgh Steelers are still keeping the door open for a potential deal with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but owner Art Rooney II made it clear they won’t wait indefinitely.
Speaking at the NFL’s annual league meetings, Rooney acknowledged the team’s interest in Rodgers but emphasized the need to make a decision sooner rather than later. “We’re willing to be patient, but not forever,” Rooney told reporters. “At some point, we have to move forward with what’s best for our team.”
Rodgers, currently with the New York Jets, has been the subject of trade speculation for weeks. The Steelers have been linked to him as they look for a veteran quarterback to compete with or mentor Russell Wilson, whom they signed to a one-year deal. However, negotiations with the Jets appear to have stalled, leaving Pittsburgh in a holding pattern.
Rooney’s comments suggest that while the Steelers remain interested, they aren’t going to be left waiting if Rodgers or the Jets drag out the process. Pittsburgh has other options, including sticking with Wilson or adding another quarterback via the draft. With the offseason program approaching, the team will need clarity soon.
For now, the Rodgers saga continues, but the Steelers’ patience has its limits.
