Cam Heyward isn’t a fan of the Pro Bowl’s current format and wants the NFL to bring back full-contact football. The Pittsburgh Steelers star took to social media to voice his frustration, saying:
“Bring back the real Pro Bowl game!! Pass rushers need to eat.”
The NFL revamped the Pro Bowl in 2023, replacing the traditional 11-on-11 tackle game with a mix of skill competitions and a 7-on-7 flag football matchup. The change came after years of declining intensity, as players avoided hard hits to prevent injuries.
While the league’s goal was to keep players safer while still celebrating their talents, the new format leaves linemen like Heyward with little to do besides skill contests. His call for a return to real football echoes the sentiments of many fans who miss the days when the Pro Bowl at least resembled an actual NFL game.
Whether the league will consider a change remains to be seen, but for now, flag football appears to be here to stay.
