Stefanski, Berry Feeling the Heat? Browns’ Brass in a Tougher Spot Than Giants

Browns’ Leadership Secure Despite 2024 Struggles, Unlike Giants’ Front Office

The Cleveland Browns had a brutal 2024 season, plummeting from a 10-win playoff team to a three-win disaster. Many fans expected head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry to be fired after the collapse, but instead, team owner Jimmy Haslam doubled down on his faith in them, signing both to five-year extensions. While some see 2025 as a do-or-die season for the duo, ESPN’s Field Yates argues otherwise.

Yates points out that truly desperate teams act with urgency in free agency and the draft, making aggressive moves to save jobs. The Browns, however, have shown no such desperation. If Haslam had serious doubts about Stefanski and Berry, he likely would have cleaned house already. Instead, the extensions suggest the Browns’ leadership isn’t on the hot seat the way the New York Giants’ front office is.

The Giants, led by GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, are in a much shakier position. Unlike Cleveland, New York is widely expected to take a quarterback with their high draft pick, signaling a franchise in turmoil trying to find stability. The Browns, by contrast, have the flexibility to make a strategic pick rather than a desperate one.

That’s not to say Cleveland can afford another disaster. The Browns need to show signs of progress after last year’s mess, but ownership’s patience suggests they won’t make rash decisions. Firing and hiring new coaches and executives every few years hasn’t worked for struggling franchises like the Jets. Cleveland’s stability under Berry and Stefanski, despite setbacks, gives them a much stronger foundation heading into 2025.
