President Donald Trump made a high-profile appearance at the Washington Commanders’ Week 10 matchup against the Detroit Lions, where he took part in a halftime ceremony to swear in new military service members. But the crowd’s reaction was far from welcoming.

When Trump appeared on the Jumbotron from his luxury suite during the ceremony, a wave of loud and relentless boos echoed across the stadium. It was a striking moment, reflecting a strong sentiment from fans — and it came as the nation entered the 40th day of the ongoing government shutdown.

Since beginning his second term in January, Trump has stayed unusually involved in the Commanders’ affairs. Over the summer, he reportedly threatened to block the team’s proposed new stadium unless it brought back its old name. More recently, reports have suggested he wants the franchise’s next stadium named after him. Neither idea appears likely to happen, but both have kept him in the headlines.

Trump’s visit marked the first appearance by a sitting U.S. president at an NFL game since 1978. It also continued his string of attending major sporting events, including the Ryder Cup, the Daytona 500, and the U.S. Open.

On the field, Washington’s struggles deepened. The Commanders trailed 35–16 entering the fourth quarter, facing what looked like their seventh loss of the season. With quarterback Jayden Daniels sidelined for several weeks due to a left elbow injury, the team remains in survival mode, hoping to turn things around before it’s too late.
