CNN’s top data expert, Harry Enten, gave a “reality check” on Tuesday, breaking down just how popular Donald Trump actually is right now.
Enten pointed out that while there’s a lot of talk about Trump being unpopular, the numbers tell a different story. “He’s actually more popular now than he was at any point in his first term—and even more popular than when he won re-election in 2024,” he said.
Looking at the data, Trump’s current net favorability rating sits at -4 points. That’s an improvement from the -7 he had after winning the election and the -10 he averaged in March 2017 during his first term. “When you compare Trump against himself, he’s actually closer to his peak popularity than his lowest point,” Enten explained, adding that historically, Trump’s numbers tend to be underestimated.
Enten also highlighted polling showing that more Americans than ever believe the country is “on the right track” under Trump. “The percentage of people saying we’re headed in the right direction is through the roof,” he said.
While Trump’s favorability has always been a polarizing topic, Enten’s breakdown suggests he’s in a stronger position than many might assume.
