It seems Pete Alonso and the New York Mets might not be parting ways after all. Despite months of uncertainty and limited suitors in the market, a recent report suggests that a deal between the Mets and their longtime slugger is now more likely than expected.
The Mets initially approached Alonso’s free agency with caution, making it clear that any return would have to be on their terms. Owner Steve Cohen has emphasized financial discipline, and president of baseball operations David Stearns has explored potential replacements. However, as free agency drags on, Alonso’s options have dwindled—leaving the door open for a Mets reunion.
The Market Didn’t Materialize as Expected
Alonso, a four-time All-Star and one of baseball’s premier power hitters, has seen his market develop slower than anticipated. Outside of interest from the Toronto Blue Jays, few teams have aggressively pursued him. With top free agents landing lucrative deals elsewhere, Alonso has seemingly “run out of alternatives,” according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
“Now, after it has become clear that the Mets and Astros aren’t budging from their offers, it’s now decision time, with Alonso expected to return while Bregman departs and goes elsewhere,” Nightengale reported.
This shift in momentum could work in the Mets’ favor, allowing them to retain their franchise cornerstone at a more favorable price.
Why the Mets Need Alonso’s Bat in 2025
The Mets have been aggressive this offseason, adding key pieces like Juan Soto to an already talented lineup. But bringing back Alonso could transform them into a true offensive powerhouse.
Pairing Alonso with Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, Mark Vientos, and Soto would give the Mets one of the best top-five batting orders in the National League. Nimmo’s consistent on-base ability, Lindor’s MVP-caliber production, and Vientos’ emerging power already make for a strong foundation. Adding Alonso—who has led the National League in home runs since 2019—would elevate the Mets’ offense to elite status.
Alonso’s durability is another key factor. Since his MLB debut, he has never missed more than ten games in a season. His power and consistency have made him a cornerstone of the franchise, and losing him would leave a major gap in the lineup.
A Loaded Offense to Offset Pitching Concerns
While the Mets have made moves to improve their bullpen—such as signing AJ Minter—their starting rotation remains uncertain. Without a dominant rotation, they’ll need offensive firepower to stay competitive.
If the Mets follow the blueprint of teams like the Dodgers—who have built success around relentless offense—bringing back Alonso could be the final piece to their championship puzzle.
