Tashard Choice Reunites With Jahmyr Gibbs, Pushes Him Toward Stardom

The Detroit Lions already know they’ve got something special in Jahmyr Gibbs. But according to his new position coach, we haven’t seen anything yet.

Tashard Choice, who coached Gibbs back at Georgia Tech, is now the Lions’ new running backs coach — and he’s got big plans for Detroit’s dynamic playmaker. With Gibbs coming off a huge 2024 season, Choice says he’s ready to push him to even greater heights.

“For him, the sky is the limit,” Choice said via the team’s website. “I’m going to push him like no other. He’s one of the smartest running backs I’ve ever coached. He’s just a natural football player.”

That’s high praise coming from a coach who’s worked with plenty of talent. And it sounds like the bond between them is going to fuel something special in 2025.

Gibbs split time with David Montgomery last year, but he still managed to rack up 1,400 rushing yards and a league-best 16 touchdowns — all while averaging just under 15 carries a game. With those kinds of numbers, it’s no surprise people are whispering about an Offensive Player of the Year campaign in the making.

This season will be a true test. The Lions lost two key run blockers in Frank Ragnow and Kevin Zeitler, and new offensive coordinator John Morton is more pass-heavy than run-focused. Still, Gibbs’ explosiveness and efficiency give him a real shot at breaking into the elite RB tier alongside Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry.

If the Lions let him loose, watch out. Gibbs might not just be one of the best in Detroit — he could be one of the best in the league.
