Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good — but Ryan Williams was both when Alabama played Georgia last season.
Williams officially made his presence known with a monster performance: 6 catches, 177 yards, and a clutch, go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth that sealed Bama’s 41-34 win over the Bulldogs.
That touchdown instantly became *the* highlight of Alabama’s season. Williams pulled off an insane spin move to break free from two defenders and took it 75 yards to the house.
But here’s the wild part — that iconic play? It wasn’t even what he was supposed to do.
Talking with Jon Gruden from Barstool Sports, Williams revealed the play was technically a busted assignment. If he *hadn’t* scored, coaches might’ve marked it as a mistake.
So how did it happen? Williams said he and quarterback Jalen Milroe had talked on the sideline beforehand, and they decided to freestyle it a bit.
“I wasn’t supposed to convert \[on the route],” Williams admitted. “So technically it’s not a missed assignment.”
When Gruden asked if head coach Kalen DeBoer had anything to say about going off-script, Williams just smiled and said:
“Nothing. Touchdown.”
